Stay In The Know

The techies came to town in full force last week for the 3rd annual NOLA Tech Week. The South’s largest free technology conference, NOLA Tech Week was presented by LookFar and hosted marquee events from some of the most impressive names in the international tech world including TechCrunch Senior Writer, Jordan Crook, Kevin Wang from Microsoft, and Jon Kuperman from Twitter.

The main purpose behind this array of technological showcasing was to promote and attract the growing tech field in and to the greater New Orleans area. The events were casual and offered cocktails and food, in true NOLA fashion. Most sessions were held in the impressive new People’s Health New Orleans Jazz Market, a performing arts venue and Jazz community center in Central City. Besides offering adult beverages, what makes this conference different is that it is been designed to get the whole community involved. Events were all free, and open to the public.

The Get Online NOLA team attended several Tech Week events, and were blown away by the excitement that continues to grow around technology in the “Silicon Bayou.” Here’s a rundown of some of our favorite events from last week:

Bring Your Daughter to Hack Day

“Bring Your Daughter to Hack Day,” hosted by New Orleans Women in Tech, was held on Saturday, October 3rd on the University of New Orleans Campus. There were close to 150 attendees at the second annual event where themed workshops were offered to kids aged 4 and up. The event featured a selection of technology workshops from local organizations such as Thinkerella and Electric Girls geared to inspire young girls to enter into STEM fields.

Woman of the Year in Tech

The “Woman of the Year in NOLA Tech Award Ceremony and Celebration” took place Tuesday night, October 6th. In it’s inaugural year, the Ada Lovelace Prize for Women in Tech spotlights the achievements of one female leader in the technology field. Our very own founder, Wendy Dolan, was among the nominees. This year’s winner was Crystal McDonald, Co-Founder and CEO at GoToInterview, a New Orleans startup that allows employers to see video interviews of potential candidates. Runners up were Staacy Cannon, founder of Grok + Banter, another local startup that brings analytics to non tech advertising, and Ashley Guidry, who works with Boeing and NASA.

 

Technology: The Great Equalizer… Almost

Kelly King and Jon Kuperman, Web Developers with Twitter, spoke at “Technology: The Great Equalizer… Almost”. The event was moderated by Sean Moore from LookFar and covered topics such as retaining women and minorities in tech, tech bootcamps, zero stack development, and attracting big tech firms to NOLA.
